  7. Background.
  8.  
  9.    Stacker is compatible with Digital Research DOS (DR DOS) versions 5.0 and 
  10.    6.0.  However, there are some special considerations when using either
  11.    version of this operating system.
  12.  
  13. DR DOS 6.0.
  14.  
  15.    1. DR DOS 6 is bundled with another file compression program.  There
  16.       is no reason to use this program if you have chosen to use Stacker.  
  17.       Stacker gives you better speed, better compression, a smaller 
  18.       device driver, and more advanced features than the compression program 
  19.       that comes with DR DOS.
  20.  
  21.    2. Installing DR DOS 6.0 after Stacker is installed may require a special
  22.       procedure.  See STAC FAX index #2303. 
  23.       "Upgrading to DR DOS 6.0 with Stacker Installed" for details.

  25. DR DOS 5.0 and 6.0.
  26.      
  27.    If you configure Stacker to use EMS for its cache, or if you load the 
  28.    Stacker device driver into upper memory, the following message will be 
  29.    displayed by the Stacker device driver when you start your computer:
  30.  
  31.    NOTE: "In DR DOS, loading Stacker high (or using /EMS)
  32.           may slow disk access.  Please see the Stacker README
  33.           file for help."

  35.    This condition can be remedied by using the /ND parameter on the
  36.    STACKER.COM device line in Config.sys.  Use the /ND parameter if your
  37.    hard disk controller is NOT a bus-master controller.  (If you are
  38.    unsure of  whether your disk controller is a bus-master, it probably
  39.    isn't.)  If you DO use a bus-master disk controller and it does not
  40.    support virtual DMA, DO NOT use the /ND switch to increase disk
  41.    performance.

  43.    If you do not use the /ND parameter and wish to suppress the warning
  44.    message, place the /NW (no warning) parameter on the Stacker DEVICE
  45.    statement in the CONFIG.SYS file.
  46.  
  47. DR DOS 5.0.
  48.  
  49.    Under DR DOS 5.0,  the SSWAP option does not operate properly with
  50.    Stacker versions 1.0-1.11.  It is recommended that you upgrade to Stacker
  51.    version 2.0 in order to SSWAP the Stacker drives.
